Day 6: The Grand Canyon
Sunrise today was at 5:18am and TWB was up at 5:00am! We quickly packed and brushed our teeth, eating our peanut butter bagels on the way to the
Grand Canyon. Taking turns using only ONE (two stall) bathroom we were
finally ready for our hike and separated into the one mile, one and a half
miles, and three mile groups before heading into the Canyon. As we made our
first steps into the Canyon, we were chilled by the piercing winds. But as the
weather began to heat up, we continued to enjoy the natural beauty of the
canyon around us. However, when we exited, we lacked sweat despite the 112
degree temperature. As groups gradually ended their hikes by making their way
to the top, we celebrated and congratulated one another on our various accomplishments.
The rest of the day was spent washing clothes, taking showers, and relaxing however
one wished. On another note, today was even more special due to the opportunity
for everyone to call their loved ones for the first time in six days. Everyone struggled
to find a strong signal, even if it meant climbing on rocks, trees, and picnic
tables. Emotions ran high as tears came about. To lighten the mood we were
served the famous Deaton Stew, consisting of any food left over food from the past
several days. Surprisingly enough it was pretty good considering the weird
collage of food. By the end of the night we gathered around and sang some songs
including “Baby” by Justin Bieber led by the girls. Before dispersing for bed,
Grant and the counselors surprised us with “I hiked the Grand Canyon” t-shirts!!
