Day 11- Highway 1

Day 11: Highway 1

Hello everybody!  It’s the Sleepys here with our blog post.  This morning we woke up at 6:00 am at our most beautiful campsite so far on the trip.  Waking up next to the beach is definitely a treat.
We made our way to Walmart.  Everyone got some form of breakfast, whether it was from the McDonalds within the Walmart or the apples and muffins provided it to us.  Some passengers on Carolina Girl even bought bowls and spoons to eat Lucky Charms with.  How charming.

As we left Highway 101 and got on the infamous Highway 1 (the one you’ve seen in the movies and car commercials) we enjoyed the amazing views as we saw how the incredible mountains dropped off into the Pacific.  We also kept an eye out for seals and whales as we rode along the coast.

After going along the scenic highway for a few hours, we took a quick break at a cliff side hotel to use the restroom and take some pictures.  Though it was still foggy at this point, the views were absolutely breathtaking.  Many of us even got a photo op with our very own Grant Deaton!

As we marked the halfway point in our trip at noon today, we all became reminiscent of the times we’ve had together thus far.  Traveling on Highway 1 along the Pacific Coast was incredibly awe-inspiring and brought us all together in new ways as we sat with new people and created new friendships.

On our way to San Fran, we made a quick 30-minute stop in Monterey where people were allowed to shop, get coffee, and take some Instagram-worthy pictures by the coast.  There was even a sock shop, so don’t be surprised if we come back with some super cool socks!

After the pit stop in Cannery Row, we continued our journey to San Francisco through the artichoke capital of the world (exciting, right?) and saw advertisements for artichoke cupcakes, brownies, and much more.  We also passed through Marilyn Monroe’s hometown.  On our way to the church to bed down for the night, Josh pointed out some of the real estate on the outskirts of San Francisco.  Even houses that were about 1000 square feet would be over $2 million!

As we bed down for the night, we would like to thank Penny and Jerry for graciously offering a space in the Lakeside Presbyterian Church to sleep.  We are grateful for the warmth and dryness that we will get to take advantage of today and tomorrow night.  We are going to shower at the YMCA now (very briefly, so sorry if we stink when we get home) so we’re out for the night!
