Day 2- New Orleans

Day 2- New Orleans

The start of day 2 was certainly one to remember.  Most of our participants started their day at 1 in the morning because of the frequently used train tracks 20 feet away from our campsite.  Others sleep was disturbed because they decided setting up under a lamppost was a good idea. However, everyone’s day began with the counselors whistling and screaming at the butt-crack of dawn (A.K.A 5:45 AM).  We boarded the bus at 6:30. Josh thought it was funny to play train related songs.  Most of us tried to get a little more sleep as we made our way to Auburn University. On the bus, we sang Sweet Home Alabama as we crossed the state line. We took some pictures while Grant gave his rendition of a tour around campus.  Marina presented her research on Auburn, While Sydney F. presented her research on the state of Alabama. Did you know it’s illegal to flick a booger in the wind in Alabama? Lauren and Jenna decided to rep Auburn’s rival. Roll Tide! Then we made our second stop at Wally World A.K.A. Walmart.  After that we began the long haul across Alabama and Mississippi. We were all a little freaked out to see that the toilet water in Mississippi was yellow! To pass the time, the participants on the bus sang some karaoke to keep each other entertained. Will summed up the experience with this quote: “Just because someone says they can sing doesn’t mean they’re good.” We then played a Pitch Perfect style riff-off competition. After that we arrived at the Big Easy, New Orleans. We started off at the Mississippi River where Olivia Peters presented her research on Bourbon Street, Cody Allen presented on Jackson Square, Ruthie Brock did her research on the St. Louis Cathedral, Gracie Crocker presented her research on Café Dumonde, and lastly Joe Flanagan researched the Mississippi River. We then took a quick group walkthrough of the amazing St. Louis Cathedral.  After that much too short visit in the AC ventilated cathedral, we took a group picture and then we got set loose.  Some chowed down on the world-famous beignets at the Café Dumonde, while others shopped and took in all the culture New Orleans has to offer. After our little adventure, an interesting one, we headed to our campground and unpacked buses and vans with all the luggage while the cooks, the Happy’s, went to the good old Wally World so they could cook dinner for us.  While we were waiting for the cooks to get back from Walmart we practiced for the competition of the night. The song “Dixieland Delight” by Alabama was the base of this competition. Each group was to make their own show using the song and try to be the best in order to get the prize. When the cooks got back they went straight to work and made some extraordinary chicken tacos for the participants and man they were pretty good!! Some nice sugar cookies were for dessert.  When we were finished with dinner we went on to some pretty good performances for the night. Each group pretty much killed it. After the show there was an encore. This time it was with participant Piper Gallen and trip director Josh Kerns. Many bugs were in the room and after Evan Das killed the bug on center stage Piper decided to pick it up and place it outside.  As she was walking out the door, we all started cheering “eat it, eat it, eat it!” So another game of What Are The Odds broke out between the two and they eventually had to eat the bug. Piper took a wing and Josh handled the rest.  The crowd was disgusted. However, it was a very eventful ending to a very eventful day. Before we headed to the showers for the night we were given our TWB apparel and let us tell you it is sexyyyyy.  We are off to the showers and signing off for the night so we can wake up at 4:30 tomorrow with no hesitation.
